Applied Materials Sucks Customer Reviews and Feedback

From Everything.Sucks

Applied Materials, Inc. is an American corporation that supplies equipment, services and software for the manufacture of semiconductor (integrated circuit) chips for electronics, flat panel displays for computers, smartphones and televisions, and solar products. The company also supplies equipment to produce coatings for flexible electronics, packaging and other applications. The company is headquartered in Santa Clara, California, in Silicon Valley.

An employee who left just recently after working 2 years for Applied Materials had this to say, "They don’t care about your career, there is a lot of assaults in the company, unsafe work environment, the management is poor especially at the ETCH department. Human Resource is also useless and there's way too many V.P.'s. This company is still very much an "old boys network". The lack of communication from Splinter all the way down is very frustrating. The way they handle the layoff's and the secrecy behind it all is ridiculous. No one knows who left until their emails get bounced back. And Lotus Notes sucks. Period."

Current Employee - Mechanical Engineer says

"Applied India, is just a cost center and not many interesting projects happen here. If you are mechanical engineer you will be working on dud stuff. You have zero to null chances of climbing the ladder as mid management people are already in position of strength . Work place harassment is common. AGS , managers are very scared of new folks who can out perform them and will find every reason to hurt them. Any NCG (New College Graduates) who join here will leave in span of 2 and half year , they are from IIT and NIT's and they know its stupid to continue here. Developing local leadership is joke."

Former Employee - Senior Software Engineer says

"Pathetic technology stack to work with. All the new tech will be discussed and developed secretly in Israel and will be handed over to India team after 2-3 years for maintenance. No training plan for lateral hires, need to roam around and ask everyone about the legacy framework that they use. Any new ideas and tech suggestions from India are always ignored and suppressed specially in AI/ML domain. Too many meetings and too many reorganizations. Half the time gets wasted in convincing people from the other side. All the managers are old guys who joined the company as a fresher and don't align well with new managers and architects, that's why so many of new guys leave. And every manager keeps a prodigy with them who gets all the good work, promotions while others are being ignored. Currently there is a trend to hire everyone from GE probably to imitate all the failures from there to here. It's just a regular offshore account of an MNC where all the cost cutting , and maintenance work happens, nothing different ."

Current Employee - Java Developer says

"Crap work, no defined requirement. Weak and dis interested management Clashes in architects over design, post agreements. Feels like working for a person rather then a company."

Former Employee - Senior Business Analyst says

"Some people can be the worst stain mark to the company. They lead the team and there is no specific recruitment process in some teams. People bring in candidates from different teams who has no relevance to the current team in the name of experiment and close bonding. There are people who are surviving just because they are good to the director siting in US. They seriously have neither any project nor any position in the team. The word manager is matter of mockery in that team. They make any random person as manager and then train them for people management where as things should have happened in reverse way. HR team here is just to fill position and manage recruitment process. Employees are not taken care well here. They are been threaten to an extent that people have to carry phone to meeting to record what manager are saying. The environment is very scary and demotivating. Happy to leave AM AT."

Current Employee - Software Development Engineer says

"- Micromanagement to its peak. Most of the managers have climbed to the manager's position just on the basis of there number of years spent with the CSS department though they don't even have any manager like basic qualities. - They don't respect your personal time and managers prime task is to keep track of what time you come and leave, and later in the day did you login from home or not. Utter rubbish!! - The autonomy of work even at senior/lead developer role is not given due to continuous micromanagement and you will feel like quitting your job every day. - AT CSS department there is no development work and nothing is there in future too because CSS department is just meant for maintenance and bug fixing work from US for the software products which were developed 10-15 years ago, so now you can also understand what kind of old technology you will be working on. - Pay scale is also not at par to the industry standards because they hire mainly to keep the headcount for billing the parent branch in US. - In CSS department they do talk about culture and values but contradict them at each and every step. - High attrition rate in the CSS department because of all of the above reasons. - Asking WFH is equivalent to asking for kidneys of manager. You won't believe it, once on taking WFH my manager said that if you are working from home then you should have more tasks on your plate. What nonsense thought it is, I still can't get it. - Expect calls and text from your manager outside office hours."

Former Employee - Software Developer says

"Yes Boss kind of culture in CSS Group Bangalore only. You can have growth only if you have Yes Boss attitude, fake and loud smile and some leave/fired whose position you can take, not because of your talent and caliber. All non technical guy has become manager because of Yes Boss culture. Their main job is to track when you come and leave, after home do you login or not? till what time of night, would you be online in IM for just in case someone from US may think of ping you? Few people types mail from office and send from home during late night time just to show that they worked till late night and are highly appreciated one. More focus on when you come and go, rather than work. Focus only on visibility not on work quality. Even worse than service industry. Lot of favoritism within the group, whoever butter up his/her manager only those will be promoted, chances to US visit. Earlier they used to hire from IIT/NIT, now only from respective manager's college. Only bug fixing work is being done from India, good work does not come to Bangalore at all as most of good technical people have already left. Company policy is there to do work from home. If someone is doing work from home because of some personal reason/medical reason, he/she will be asked for n reason and finally end of less hike/bonus whereas few of their favourite people are working from home since couple of years and enjoying good salary. On paper they claim about diverse culture and all. Recently few of women employee has been fired and harassed or in the list of firing list as after maternity leave their productivity may get impacted."

Current Employee - Engineer says

"Local management is the worst you can find in industry"

Former Employee - Mechanical Design Engineer says

"Very less Practical Exposure. Growth opportunities very few for the employees in INDIA as compared to the employees in US. Location can be a problem if you are from North India as it was for me. Salary less as compared to other firms. Less Diversity in terms of quality of work as company not involved in Manufacturing side. It can be tough for a Mechanical Engineer to adjust into a firm dealing with Semi-conductors. Limited Opportunities if you are looking for a switch afterwards as No/little scope for semiconductor industry in INDIA."

Current Employee - Software Engineer says

"You shall not join this company if you are a software engineer. It one of the best for Mechanical or Electirca Engineer Even if you want to join, then opt for CSS department as chances for onsite in more in that department In PDC, product are already developed. You will be adding few lines of codes here and there which you also will not know what it is meant for as most of the stuffs are related to hardware Technology wise you will get exposure to learn only Core Java and that also they have their own internal framework Lots of politics are involved within the organization."

Former Employee - Senior Manufacturing Technician says

"Extremely low starting salary for fresh grad."

Technician (Former Employee) says

"Hate it they unreasonable poeple They just dont care about nothing well it over now we all have to move on but the poeple they have in supervisor role should not be thereHateHate"

Engineer (Former Employee) says

"They don’t care about your career, there is a lot of assaults in the company, unsafe company, management is poor specially at ETCH department, HR is useless"

Tecnico (Former Employee) says

Manufacturing Technician II (Current Employee) says

"-No room for improvement -Low raises -In order to move up you have to be a puppet!! You'll spend 10 plus years giving your all just to get penniesExperience different workLack of opportunity"

Material Program Manager (Current Employee) says

"One of the worst companies that I have had pleasure to work for and taught me a good lesson of what is important. First of all it’s very ancient company with political driven top down approach. Broken into business units where they hardly speak to each other and culture depends on which business unit you would go. They portray and have false image of great place to work but in truth not a great place for ambitious young millennials."

IT Support (Former Employee) says

"The onboarding took over a month. The manager took a very long time to tell me i got the job. First day i cane in and sat, they do not have training for employees. They had me leave way from Cedar park almsot to Hwy w90 to do a drug testm i apparently was supposed to do that before starting but wasnt informed until i reportef in to work 3 hrs later. The manager stated i would be paid fullday. But i havent recieced oaymwbt and they havent returned emails or callss."

Mechanical Engineer (Current Employee) says

"My comments only applies to DDP department. I've heard good feedback from other departments, but in this department not a single engineer is happy. Extremely long work hours including evening, night and weekends and lots of unrealistic deadlines. A lot of micromanagement, several managers/directors will ask you to do different things and want to see update the next day. Pay is low compare to the high intensity of the job. Only a few managers have people management skill. This department's high turnover rate already tells you everything.a lot to learn, a lot of smart peopleno life, low pay, too many emotional incapable people"

Process Engineer Manager (Former Employee) says

"It is a lousy company to work for including the lousy management that they do not know how to manage I quit the company because of its management not because of the company"

Customer Engineer (Current Employee) says

"Save yourself the trouble, don’t bother. Lack of structure, no guidance, it’s sink or attempt to swim. Try a reputable semiconductor conductor company like ASML, maybe even LAM."

Engineering Tech III (Current Employee) says

"Don't look back just RUN!! If I could give zero or negative stars I would. This is by FAR the most poorly managed company I have worked for, and I have worked for a few. No possibility for advancement. You never know what your schedule will be until the very last minute. You have no life because you can't plan anything in advance. The negatives go on and on, and the positives are few. I repeat, and in all seriousness, run away!!! Run like your life depends upon it.It's a job.Too many to list."

Assembler III (Former Employee) says

"Don't care about work life balance just work people to the ground, 13 days straight at 1 minute & then less than 40 hrs a week the next schedule crazy"

Hillsboro, Oregon - Logistics Coordinator (Former Employee) says

"The management and training policies need updating. No structure within the company for their new hires. I recommend that they get a training supervisor."

Systems Administrator (Former Employee) says

"This company will grind u to the bone. Their leadership is inept. They have little regard for work life balance. Way too many managers per employee. I hated every minute up until the point where i needed to train my Indian counterparts to take over my work.stock options/bonusesadditional hours worked for bonuses and pressure put upon you is no where near worth it"

Mechanical Assembler (Former Employee) says

"I worked for a small local semi conductor company until purchased by Applied. I think that they're a bigger machine than the federal government. Benefits have spiraled only to fatten the big guys at the top.NoneEverything"

Design Engineer (Current Employee) says

"• Responsible for the release and management of the engineering change order for assigned Business unit and product families from initial supplier problem statement, solution statement through implementation and execution of the engineering change. • Support to manufacturing by documenting and releasing engineering drawings and BOM using engineering change order process. • Review ECR/ECOs for content completeness, structure of BOM, drawings, drawing mark ups, specifications and reason code."

Adecco Contractor,Accounting (Former Employee) says

"I left this job because of extreme harassment- all parties involved in the harassment were fired shortly thereafter. HORRIBLE Applied had opted to lay off a majority of its employees to refill those positions with contractors (me). (We) The contractors were hated/harassed to the point of physical violence which I've NEVER experienced in a work place. I was appalled that ANY company would ever allow such behavior for any amount of time towards innocent people who just wanted to work and make a living.NoneToo many to count"

Mechanical Technician (Former Employee) says

"worked on R&D Prototype project Pasma Etch machine open &friendly atmosphere an opportunity to learn an exciting new project with a highly skilled staff and Department Manager cannot recall most difficult phase of project at this time. A most highly enjoyable place to work would do so again if the opportunity arose`Easy going atmosphere and personnelNo particular negatives to recall at present time."

Scanning Technician (Former Employee) says

"This company is truly the worst company I’ve ever worked for in this industry. They have no regard to how you are as a person. You feel like a machine and even then you never work fast enough for them. The management is not good, unfair and hire only foreigner women. They just don’t care about you as a person. No work life balance whatsoever.MoneyUnrealistic working conditions"

Customer Engineer (Former Employee) says

"Too many managers and up that got beat up as children. Major lieutenant style power trips. Literally will try to destroy an employee to prove they own you at all costs. Beware"

Test Engineer (Former Employee) says

"Nothing but negative. You are not to be honest to stay. There is continuous danger of being laid off. Changes in the culture due to outsourcing effects your well being."
